COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT BREAST CANCER: HOW MUCH CHEMOTHERAPY SHOULD BE GIVEN?

The amount of chemotherapy is dependent on a number of factors, including the health of the patient, the stage of the disease at diagnosis, the aggressiveness of the tumor, and the patient's tolerance of any prior chemotherapy. In general, smaller doses are given to patients with a history of liver, kidney, or heart disease, and to patients diagnosed in the very early stages of breast cancer. Lower dosage is also given to elderly patients or to those patients who have had significant side effects from previously administered chemotherapy. If the cancer has only been diagnosed in its late stages, or if the tumor is considered aggressive, then larger doses are administered. High-dose regimens, long-term therapy, or alternation of drug combinations may be utilized in the case of extremely aggressive tumors. The interval between cycles may also be altered so that the chemotherapy is administered more frequently than at the customary intervals of three to four weeks.
